Shoe Construction Explained — From Upper to Welt to Sole
A shoe is a system of connected parts. This guide explains what the upper, lining, insole, welt, filling, shank, outsole and heel actually do — and why construction method matters for repairability.
When people describe a shoe as “well made,” they often mean several different things at once: the leather looks good, the stitching is neat, the shape is elegant and the sole feels substantial. Construction is the part underneath those impressions — the way the shoe’s components are actually joined into a working structure.
The upper
The upper is everything that wraps around the top and sides of the foot. It may be made from one piece or many pattern pieces. Its seams define details such as cap toes, aprons, quarters and decorative panels.
The lining
The lining sits between the foot and the upper in lined shoes. It affects the interior feel, helps manage friction and supports the upper. Not every shoe uses the same lining construction, which is why Handsole treats lining as product-specific information rather than a site-wide promise.
The insole
The insole is the structural layer under the foot inside the shoe. In welted construction, it is not merely a removable comfort insert. It participates in the structure that connects the upper to the bottom of the shoe.
The welt
A welt is a strip that runs around part or all of the perimeter of many traditionally constructed shoes. The outsole can then be stitched to the welt, making the outsole more replaceable than in constructions where the upper and sole are joined in a less serviceable way.
Filling and shank
Welted shoes often contain filling between the insole and outsole. A shank or other support element may reinforce the waist and heel area. The exact materials and method vary by maker and model.
The outsole and heel
The outsole is the ground-contact layer. Leather and rubber behave differently in grip, feel, weather resistance and appearance. Heels may combine stacked leather, rubber lifts or other materials. Again, these are product-specific decisions rather than universal markers of quality.
Construction method: why it matters
The construction method determines how these parts are joined. Goodyear-welted shoes use a welt-sewing process in which the welt is attached to a rib at the insole before the outsole is stitched to the welt. Hand-welted shoes create the inseaming connection by hand, typically working directly with the insole rather than relying on the machine-welting rib used in standard Goodyear construction.
Both can produce excellent, repairable footwear. Construction type alone does not rescue poor fit, weak materials or careless finishing. It is one part of the whole shoe.

What “resoleable” really means
A repairable construction can make sole replacement more practical because the outsole can be removed without necessarily dismantling the upper. But “resoleable” is not a promise of unlimited rebuilds. A cobbler still has to assess the upper, welt, insole and surrounding structure.
What to look for when evaluating a shoe
- Clear material disclosure: the maker should tell you what the upper, lining and sole actually are.
- Construction disclosure: “handmade” is too broad; ask how the sole is attached.
- Fit information: a beautiful construction on the wrong last is still the wrong shoe for that foot.
- Repair strategy: understand whether the shoe can reasonably be resoled and what condition is required.
- Finishing: edge work, stitching consistency and clean lasting are visible evidence of execution.

Upper construction and bottom construction are separate decisions
A shoe’s upper pattern tells you how the leather wraps the foot; bottom construction tells you how that upper is attached to the structure underfoot. An Oxford can be Goodyear welted, hand welted, Blake stitched or cemented. A loafer can also use different bottom constructions. Do not confuse the family name with the method used to build the bottom.
Blake stitching and cemented construction
In Blake construction, a stitch passes through the insole and outsole, creating a direct connection without the external welt architecture used in Goodyear or hand-welted shoes. This can allow a lighter, more flexible profile. Cemented construction uses adhesives rather than a structural sole stitch. Neither description alone tells you the quality of every material or the fit of the shoe.
The practical difference for a buyer is serviceability. Some constructions are easier for more cobblers to resole than others, and the original construction can influence what repair options remain attractive later.
Why the insole deserves attention
In traditional welted footwear, the insole is structural. Its thickness, material and preparation contribute to the shoe’s bottom architecture. That is very different from a removable sock liner that can simply be pulled out of a sneaker.
Water resistance is not waterproofing
Welted constructions can reduce some direct pathways for water compared with simpler assemblies, but seams, leather, sole material and finishing all matter. A welted leather-soled dress shoe should not be marketed as waterproof merely because a welt is present.
Repairability is a system
A replaceable outsole is useful only if the rest of the shoe remains worth saving. Upper leather condition, cracks around flex points, damaged lining, weakened welt, heel wear and insole condition all influence whether repair makes sense. Good construction increases options; it does not eliminate maintenance.
How to read Handsole construction copy
If a product states Hand Welted, Goodyear Welted, Blake or another method, that is the construction claim for that product. If the field is not populated, do not infer it from a global footer, a Journal article or another pair. The PDP specification is intentionally the source of truth.
