Getting Started — What "Handmade" Actually Means
What makes Handsole different from factory-made shoes?
| Factory Shoes | Handsole Handmade |
|---|---|
| Fit information varies by brand | Five named Handsole lasts with US sizing and D–EEE width choices where offered |
| Material descriptions can be generic | Product-specific upper, lining and sole fields on each PDP |
| Construction may be unclear | Construction is stated by product rather than assumed across the catalog |
| Stock-only sizing | Finished pairs plus made-to-order configurations depending on the design |
| Standard options only | Custom Made review for requirements beyond normal product choices |
Are handmade shoes worth the investment?
They can be, especially if you value repairability, fit options, and long-term use. A well-maintained welted shoe can often be resoled multiple times, which may extend its useful life instead of replacing the entire pair when the sole wears.
Think cost per wear, not a fixed lifetime promise.
Purchase price, frequency of wear, care, and future resoling all affect long-term value. Check the current product price and ask us about repair options for the style you choose.
Where are Handsole shoes made?
Handsole customer support is based in Texas, while production is handled by our specialist shoemaking workshop in Pakistan. We sell direct and state the construction and availability for each pair on the product page.
Sizing, Fit & The Last — Choosing the Right Geometry
How do I determine my correct size for handmade shoes?
- Trace your foot on paper while standing, weight evenly distributed. Wear the socks you'll use with the shoes.
- Measure length from heel to longest toe.
- Measure width across the widest part — the ball of the foot.
- Compare to our size chart or use our Foot Shape & Last Guide.
For the most accurate recommendation, send us your tracings via our contact form. We'll personally advise which last and width fits you best.
What is a shoe last, and why does it matter?
A shoe last is the three-dimensional form around which a shoe is shaped. It influences toe profile, forefoot volume, instep space, waist and heel geometry.
Size alone does not describe all of that geometry. Handsole uses five named lasts; compare the product's last and offered width before ordering.
Which last is right for my foot type?
| Last | Shape direction | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Edward | Narrow almond | Forefoot and instep measurements carefully |
| Henry | Semi-square | Balanced toe shape and overall volume |
| Arthur | Round / roomier forefoot | Forefoot room and offered width |
| Winston | Apron-toe oriented | Product-specific loafer fit notes |
| McKenzie | Elongated pointed-almond | Toe geometry without automatically sizing down |
What do the widths D, E, EE, and EEE mean?
| Width | Name | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| D | Standard | Handsole standard men’s width and the starting point for average foot volume. |
| E | Roomier | Adds forefoot and overall volume without forcing a longer size. |
| EE | Wide | For broader feet or customers who need additional room around the ball and toe joints. |
| EEE | Extra Wide | Our roomiest offered width for very broad or high-volume feet. |
Width availability varies by design and last. Product pages show the widths offered for that style; if you need something outside those options, contact us about custom fit.
My feet are different sizes. Can you accommodate that?
If your left and right measurements differ meaningfully, contact us before production. We can review whether the standard configuration works or whether the order needs a custom/asymmetric adjustment and confirm any effect on price or lead time before you approve it.
I have a sensitive or prominent forefoot area. What should I consider?
Start by comparing a rounder forefoot shape such as Arthur with the widths offered for the product. Footwear guidance cannot diagnose or treat a foot condition; if pressure is painful or persistent, seek appropriate clinical advice before relying on a shoe change.
I have ongoing arch or heel pain. Can Handsole diagnose the cause?
No. We can help compare shoe geometry, size, width and room, but footwear guidance is not medical treatment and we cannot diagnose pain. For persistent, severe or diagnosed pain, consult a qualified healthcare professional.
My second toe is longer. What shoe geometry should I compare?
Compare the actual toe-room geometry rather than automatically sizing up or down. McKenzie is the most elongated pointed-almond direction in the range, while Arthur is rounder. If you have pain or a diagnosed condition, use clinical guidance alongside footwear fit information.
I need more vertical toe room. What should I compare?
Compare the toe-box shape, your forefoot measurements and the offered width. Arthur is the rounder, roomier forefoot direction. Do not use footwear guidance as treatment for a diagnosed toe condition.
My foot spreads noticeably when I stand. What should I measure?
Measure while standing and compare the widest part of each foot with the offered widths. A rounder Arthur or semi-square Henry may be useful comparison points, but the correct choice depends on the full measurement and product fit notes.
I have heel slip or need different instep volume. What should I compare?
Compare heel hold and instep volume rather than solving the issue by simply sizing down. Edward is the narrower almond direction, but the correct choice depends on your measurements and the product-specific fit notes.
My foot volume changes during the day. What should I do?
Measure at a time that reflects how you normally wear shoes and compare the product’s width/last information. Persistent or unexplained swelling is a health concern rather than a footwear-sizing problem and should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.
My feet are wide at the ball but narrow at the heel. Nothing fits both.
This is exactly what Henry (semi-square toe) was designed for. The structured heel cup holds narrowly while the semi-square forefoot provides room. Consider EE or EEE if you need more forefoot room for forefoot volume without looseness at the heel.
I keep getting heel slip. What should I check?
Check heel geometry, instep volume and whether the shoe is the correct length before sizing down. A narrower last may help some feet, but heel movement can have several causes and should be evaluated with the full fit.
My toes feel pinched in most dress shoes. What last gives more room?
Compare Henry’s semi-square direction and Arthur’s rounder forefoot, together with the width offered on the actual product. Avoid assuming that a wider-looking toe automatically means the entire shoe is wider.
The Handmade Process — How Your Shoes Are Built
How long does it take to make a pair of handmade shoes?
Finished in-stock pairs normally ship sooner. Standard made-to-order pairs typically require 7–10 working days before dispatch. Complex custom or bespoke work may take longer; we confirm the lead time before you approve the order.
| Finished in stock | Ships sooner |
| Standard made to order | Typically 7–10 working days before dispatch |
| Complex bespoke work | Quoted before approval |
If you have a fixed date, contact us before ordering. We will tell you whether the current production and shipping window can realistically meet it; expedited timing is not guaranteed.
What does "hand-lasted" mean?
Lasting is the stage where the upper is shaped around the shoe last and secured for the bottom-making process. The exact lasting method and setting time can vary by design, leather and construction. It shapes the upper; it does not guarantee that a mismatched size or last will become comfortable.
Full process walkthroughWhat is hand-welting? Why is it better than glued construction?
Hand welting is one traditional way to connect the upper/insole structure to a welt before the outsole is attached. Cemented, Blake, Goodyear-welted and hand-welted constructions use different joining methods and have different repair implications.
Handsole does not apply one construction label to the entire catalog. Check the individual product’s Materials & Construction section for the pair you are considering.
What is a hand-patina finish?
Hand-patina is dyes and oils applied layer by layer, penetrating the leather rather than sitting on the surface. Unlike machine-sprayed finishes, it creates dimensional colour that develops richer character with age and can be refreshed when needed.
Each finish is unique — a genuine expression of the artisan's hand and the beginning of your shoe's personal story.
What leathers do you use?
Leather varies by design and batch. The product page identifies the upper leather and, where relevant, lining, sole and finish. Full grain, corrected grain, suede, chrome tanning and vegetable tanning describe different material characteristics; none should be inferred across the whole catalog from one article or product.
Break-In & Care — What to Expect
How long do handmade shoes really take to break in?
Break-in varies by leather, construction, sole stiffness, lining and the individual fit. Some softening and flex development is normal; sharp pressure, numbness, significant blistering or persistent pain is a reason to stop and reassess.
A correctly selected last should not require painful “breaking in.” Some softening and adaptation is normal, but sharp pressure, persistent pain, or blistering is a sign to stop and reassess the fit.
How do I care for my handmade shoes?
Routine care: Brush away dry dust and allow the pair to air between wears. Shoe trees can help retain shape and manage moisture when they are appropriate for the shoe.
Every 3–6 months: Condition with quality leather conditioner. Don't over-condition — too much softens and shortens leather life.
Between wears: Rotation can give leather footwear more time to dry naturally. Store away from direct high heat and follow the care method for the actual leather on your product page.
Can I wear handmade shoes in rain?
Vegetable-tanned leather darkens slightly when wet — this is patina, not damage. Treat with a water-resistant spray before first wear. If they get wet, dry naturally away from heat and insert shoe trees while drying to maintain shape.
How do I clean scuffs or scratches?
On suitable smooth leather, light surface marks may respond to brushing or an appropriate cream. Deeper scratches, suede, patent and specialty finishes need different care, so identify the leather before treating it and test unfamiliar products discreetly.
Resoling & Repairs — Keeping a Serviceable Pair Going
When should I resole my shoes?
Resoling timing depends on the sole material, wear pattern, climate and frequency of use. Have the pair assessed when the outsole becomes notably thin, uneven, damaged or approaches the construction beneath it; there is no reliable fixed year interval.
How does resoling work?
- The pair is assessed first to confirm its construction and whether the existing upper, sole attachment and structure are serviceable.
- The repair or sole-replacement method is chosen for that specific construction; not every pair uses a welt or can be resoled the same way.
- After the structural work, the pair is finished and conditioned as appropriate for its leather and construction.
Repair scope varies by the pair. Some jobs may involve only the worn sole or heel component; others may need additional work, and some pairs may not be serviceable. We confirm that after inspection.
How much does resoling cost?
Contact us for current pricing. Cost depends on the construction, sole material, wear and any additional repair needed; we confirm serviceability and quote the work before proceeding.
Can you repair other damage?
We can assess heel wear (top lift replacement), stitching repairs, and some upper restoration. Send photos via our contact form for evaluation.

About Handmade Shoes & Materials
Why are handmade shoes more expensive?
| Cost Factor | What It Means for You |
|---|---|
| Production sequence | Varies by design and construction; product specifications state the actual method |
| Materials | Product-specific leather and construction materials; each product page states the exact specification |
| Hand-lasting | Upper shaped over the selected last before finishing |
| Welted construction | Designed to support future resoling when serviceable |
| Fit choice | US size, width and last guidance, with custom review when standard options are not enough |
Long-term value varies by how you wear and maintain the pair.
Repairability can lower replacement frequency, but we do not promise a fixed lifespan or cost per wear.
How long should handmade shoes last?
With proper care, rotation, and timely repair, a welted pair can remain serviceable for many years and may accept multiple resoles. Actual lifespan depends on wear frequency, climate, care, and the condition of the upper and welt.
Are handmade shoes more comfortable?
They can be more comfortable when the last and width suit your foot. Leather may soften over the first several wears, but comfort is individual and no construction can guarantee a pain-free fit for every person.
What is full-grain leather?
Full-grain means the natural grain surface has not been mechanically corrected. It is one useful material description, not a universal quality score. Handsole product pages identify the actual upper leather and finish for each pair.
What is vegetable-tanned leather?
Tanned using natural tannins from tree bark and plant materials — a process that takes months, not hours. It ages beautifully with a warm patina, is environmentally responsible and biodegradable, and breathes naturally unlike chrome-tanned leather processed with harsh chemicals.
What is the difference between full-grain and top-grain leather?
| Grade | What It Is | How It Ages | Our Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full Grain | Natural grain surface remains mechanically uncorrected | Can show natural variation; aging depends on tannage and finish | Product-specific |
| Corrected / other top-layer leather | Surface may be buffed or finished for greater uniformity | Performance and appearance depend on the actual leather and finish | Product-specific |
