The shank is hidden inside many shoes, so it attracts exaggerated claims. Its job is more specific: reinforce part of the waist and help the bottom structure resist unwanted deformation.
A shank reinforces part of the shoe. It is not an arch-treatment device and it does not define the quality of a shoe by itself.
A shoe shank is a reinforcing component positioned through part of the waist—the area between the heel and the forefoot.
Its purpose is to help the bottom structure resist unwanted bending or twisting where the shoe is not intended to flex freely.
Where is the shank?
The shank is normally hidden between internal bottom layers.
It does not run through the entire forefoot. The ball area still needs to flex during walking.
Think of the shank as reinforcement for the waist rather than a rigid plate under the whole foot.
What is a shank made from?
Depending on footwear type and construction, shanks can use steel, wood, fiberglass, molded plastic or other reinforced materials.

Do all shoes have shanks?
No.

Shank vs midsole vs insole
These terms describe different things.
The insole is the structural layer under the foot in many traditional constructions. A midsole is an intermediate bottom layer in some shoes. A shank is a reinforcing component occupying only part of the waist.

What a shank does not do

Are metal shanks dangerous at airports?
Footwear components are small and security systems vary. Do not choose or reject a construction based on airport folklore; choose the shoe for its intended use.

Why the shank stops before the ball
The forefoot must bend so the foot can roll over the ball during walking. A shank that rigidly extended through that flex zone would fight the natural movement of the shoe. The reinforcement therefore concentrates through the waist where controlled stiffness is more useful.
Shank stiffness should match heel and sole design
A high heel or heavy boot bottom can create different leverage than a low-profile dress shoe. Designers can respond with different shank shapes, materials and stiffness. “Steel shank” alone therefore tells you very little about whether the specification is appropriate.
Why some airport and magnetic myths persist
Metal components in footwear have generated plenty of folklore, but modern security screening does not make a steel shank an everyday functional problem for most wearers. It should not drive the construction decision unless you have a specific occupational requirement.
What shank failure may feel like
A damaged or displaced shank can contribute to an unusual click, change in waist support or instability, but similar symptoms can have other causes. A cobbler needs to inspect the bottom rather than diagnosing solely from sound.
Shank and arch are not the same geometry
The shank follows the shoe’s waist structure; your foot’s arch shape is anatomical. A strong shank may support the shoe without providing the particular under-arch contour a wearer prefers. Do not conflate structural reinforcement with orthotic support.

Ask how the bottom is constructed, how stiff the waist feels, where the shoe is intended to flex and whether the design suits your use. Those questions produce more meaningful answers than treating one hidden part as a quality badge.
