Loafers are slip-on dress shoes for men: no laces, a low vamp and a shape that holds the foot on its own. Penny loafers have the strap across the top and are the easiest to wear every day.
Horsebit loafers carry a metal bit across the vamp and look more polished. Tassel loafers are the dressiest of the three and work well with tailoring. Kiltie buckle and chain loafers add more detail.
Beyond the classics there are apron toe loafers with a stitched toe seam, wholecut loafers cut from one piece of leather, and textured pairs in croc, lizard and reptile-pattern leather. Need a size, width or color you don't see? Ask about Custom Made.
Penny loafers, horsebit loafers, tassel loafers and apron toe loafers.
Penny loafers go with chinos, denim and the office, and are the usual first pair. Horsebit loafers suit smart-casual outfits and tailoring. Tassel loafers are the ones to wear with a suit. Suede and nubuck loafers give a softer, more casual look, and wholecut loafers keep the upper as plain as possible.
No laces, so the shoe has to hold your heel and instep by itself.
A loafer should feel secure at the heel and over the instep from the first wear, without pinching across the top of the foot. A little heel lift when new is normal; a heel that slips out is not. Choose your width first (D, E, EE or EEE), then your size, in US 6 to 15 including half sizes.
Black for formal, brown and burgundy for everything else.
Black leather loafers are the most formal. Brown, cognac and burgundy are the most versatile and work across suits, chinos and denim. Hand-painted patina, croc-embossed and reptile-pattern finishes stand out. If you want an open heel, see our backless loafers. Each pair's leather, sole and construction are listed on its product page.
