A Derby is a lace-up dress shoe with open lacing: the eyelet panels sit on top of the vamp and open fully, so the shoe adjusts more over the instep than an Oxford and is quicker to get on.
That also makes it slightly less formal, which is why Derby shoes for men move so easily between a suit, chinos and dark denim. Plain toe Derbies in black and dark brown are the dressiest in the collection.
Apron toe Derbies, with a raised seam around the toe, are the casual end, including a cognac pair on a cream ridged sole and a black moc toe Derby on a hand-stitched Norwegian welt. The wingtip Derby adds full brogue detailing. Need a size, width or color you don't see? Ask about Custom Made.
Plain toe, apron toe and wingtip Derby shoes for work and weekends.
A black or dark brown plain toe Derby is the pair for the office and for suits that don't call for an Oxford. Apron toe Derbies and pull-up leather suit weekends, chinos and denim. Choose a green or brown patina finish when you want color, or the full brogue wingtip Derby when you want more detail on the upper.
Open lacing adjusts over the instep, not across the toe.
A Derby opens wider than an Oxford, which helps a high instep and makes the shoe easier to adjust through the day. It doesn't change the width of the forefoot, so for a wide foot choose E, EE or EEE width before a longer size. Every pair is made in US sizes 6 to 15, including half sizes.
Aniline leather dresses a Derby up; pull-up and texture dress it down.
Black and brown full-grain aniline leather Derby shoes work with tailoring. Pull-up leather lightens where it bends and looks better with wear, and textured finishes are more relaxed. For the most formal dress codes, compare our Oxford shoes. Each pair's leather, sole and construction are listed on its product page.
