Style is not only appearance. Closure and upper structure change how the shoe holds the instep, heel and ankle, which is why the same labeled size can feel different across Oxfords, Derbies, loafers and boots.
A sock is one of the layers inside the shoe. Changing from a thin dress sock to a thicker sock can noticeably change volume, heel hold and instep pressure even when shoe size stays the same.
Two feet with the same length and width can still need different toe geometry. Forefoot shape, toe taper and toe-length pattern determine how well a last matches the front of the foot.
Heel hold depends on more than shoe length. The shape of the heel cup, counter and topline determines how the rear of the shoe wraps the foot.
A foot can be wide but low-volume, narrow but high-instep, or standard at the ball and still feel loose through the heel. Width labels cannot describe all of that geometry.
Toe shape changes the character of a dress shoe, but appearance and fit are not the same thing. A narrow-looking toe can still have useful room, while a round shoe can still fit poorly.
Size tells you only part of the fit story. The last determines how that length is distributed through heel, instep, forefoot and toe box, which is why two shoes in the same size can feel completely different.
