Fit Confidence
⊞
The open heel makes the hold across the vamp and instep especially important. Your heel should rest fully on the footbed, with no overhang, and the upper should hold comfortably without pinching. Choose your US size and offered D–EEE width with the Handsole Fit Guide; avoid choosing a shorter length solely to reduce sliding.

Last & Fit
How a braided leather mule fits
With no heel counter, a mule is held on by the vamp alone. This one should feel close over the instep from the first wear, with your heel sitting fully on the footbed. The braided side panels ease a little as you wear them; the stitched apron holds its shape. Order your usual US dress shoe size. We make every size from 6 to 15 including half sizes, so braided leather mules in size 13, 14 or 15 are no problem.
Widths run D, E, EE and EEE. A broad forefoot needs more width, not more length, because a longer backless shoe lets the foot slide forward. Wear them sockless or with no-show socks, with tailored trousers, chinos or linen.
The side panels of this mule are braided by hand from strips of burgundy leather. The strips are dyed first and woven second, so the colour runs through every pass of the weave and the dark burnishing at the toe sits on top of it. A single uneven strip shows straight away in a colour this rich, which is why braided leather mules for men are rarely made in anything but black or tan.
The apron seam frames the weave and keeps the front structured, so this wears like burgundy tassel loafers with the heel removed. Woven leather slip-on shoes for men tend to be casual. This pair is cut and finished as a dress shoe.

Common questions
Use the size guide for US sizing, width and last guidance. If you are between sizes or unsure about width/last, compare your measurements with the product fit notes or contact Handsole before production. Break-in varies by the specific upper, lining, sole, construction and fit.
If the fit needs attention, contact us under the Fit Promise so we can review the issue and the available remake, adjustment or return option for that order.
Break-in varies by leather, lining, last and fit. A correctly sized pair should feel secure rather than painfully tight; the leather and insole will gradually conform with wear.
Construction details for this product are listed in the Materials & Construction section above. Where the build is resoleable, the upper can be retained while a worn sole is replaced when the pair remains serviceable.
Choose from the widths offered above. If you need unusual forefoot or instep room, have different left/right measurements, or repeatedly struggle with fit, review the Sizing & Fit guide or contact us before production so we can compare the available last/width options or a custom adjustment.
Remove loose dust with a soft brush or clean cloth. Follow the care instructions for the specific leather and finish; suede, patent, patina and two-tone uppers may need different products. Test any suitable cleaner, cream or conditioner on an inconspicuous area first, and use separate clean applicators on contrasting colours. Condition only when the leather and finish need it, rather than on a fixed schedule. Let damp shoes dry naturally away from direct heat. Contact Handsole before attempting recolouring or using a treatment whose compatibility is uncertain.
