Here is the truth: it is not your feet. It is the last. Many mass-market shoes are offered in limited last and width combinations. If the geometry does not match your foot, changing length alone may not solve the pressure or heel movement. This guide explains how each last changes toe shape, heel direction and available volume so you can compare it with your measurements and the product fit notes.
A shoe last is the three-dimensional wooden form that every shoe is built around. Think of it as the architectural mold — the shoe is shaped to the last, not to your foot. This means the last's geometry is what you're actually living with every day.

Break-in depends on the last, width, upper leather, lining, sole and construction. A correctly chosen pair may become more flexible and familiar with wear, but break-in should not be used to justify severe pressure or pain. For slender-foot profiles · higher insteps · closer heel preference
Classic almond toe, sleek and elongated. Edward is the narrower-heel direction in the Handsole range. It can be a useful starting point for customers who prefer a closer heel and a more refined forefoot profile; compare your US size, width and instep before ordering.
Narrow feet + longer toes? If you have a slender foot but your second or third toe runs longer than average, consider McKenzie instead — it combines the narrow heel geometry with the extra forefoot length your longer toes need.

Modern semi-square toe with a more open forefoot profile and clean structured lines. Henry balances additional visible toe/ball room with a comparatively controlled heel direction; the correct US size and width still determine whether that geometry suits your foot.

Arthur is the rounder, roomier forefoot direction in the Handsole range. Compare your standing measurements, the product’s offered width and the fit notes. A roomier toe shape can change available space, but footwear guidance is not treatment for pain or a diagnosed condition.

Refined apron toe with subtle rounding and a hand-stitched seam across the vamp. Winston is purpose-built for loafer and mule construction — the seam line is structural as well as decorative, and the slightly rounded toe sits between formal and casual without belonging fully to either. Elongated pointed-almond · refined dress silhouette
McKenzie is the most elongated pointed-almond direction in the Handsole range. Its cosmetic toe length can provide more space ahead of longer toe proportions while keeping a refined dress silhouette; compare your measurements and the product fit notes before choosing it.
The last is the starting point — not the end of the fit story. Once your last and width are confirmed, the shoe is built around that geometry. Upper leather, lining, sole and construction also affect how the finished pair feels and how break-in develops.
The upper is dampened slightly, then stretched over your selected last by hand using lasting pliers. The craftsman works from the toe back to the heel, refining tension and shape before finishing. These adjustments depend on reading how the leather responds.
Setting time varies by leather, construction and production sequence. Lasting establishes the shoe’s geometry; it does not replace choosing the correct size, width and last.
Hand-welted, Goodyear-welted, Blake and other construction methods join the bottom differently. Repair options depend on that method and on the condition of the rest of the shoe. The individual PDP states the construction used for the pair you are considering.
Most men don't know their width. Shoe stores rarely explain it. Handsole styles are offered across D through EEE widths, depending on the last and product. Width affects comfort as much as length, sometimes more.
Our standard men’s width for average foot volume. If length feels right but you still have pressure or heel movement, the last shape may matter more than simply sizing up.
Adds forefoot and overall volume without forcing you into a longer shoe. Useful when standard width feels snug across the ball or instep.
A wider fit for broader feet or customers who need additional room around the ball and toe joints.
Our roomiest width option for very broad or high-volume feet. Fit still depends on the last shape, so measurements are especially useful here.

"I have flat feet with low arches. Which last?"
Arthur and Henry provide different forefoot shapes. If your forefoot spreads more under load, compare the roomier shape and the offered EE / EEE widths with your standing measurements.
"I have high arches and a narrow heel — heel slip is constant."
Edward has the narrowest heel direction in the current Handsole range. If you have a higher instep, compare the instep volume and width carefully rather than assuming one last is automatically correct; contact Handsole before production when uncertain.
"My feet are wide at the ball but narrow at the heel — nothing fits both."
Henry combines a comparatively controlled heel direction with a semi-square forefoot. Compare EE or EEE when more forefoot volume is needed, then confirm heel and instep fit before ordering.
"I need extra room around one forefoot. What should I do?"
A rounder forefoot may provide more room, but we cannot prescribe a last as treatment for a foot condition. Send left/right measurements before production if they differ; we will confirm whether a standard or custom adjustment is appropriate.
"I need more vertical room around my toes. What should I compare?"
Arthur has the roundest, roomiest toe direction in the range. If you need additional forefoot space, compare EE and EEE measurements before ordering.
"My second toe is longer. How should I compare toe shapes?"
McKenzie offers the most cosmetic toe length in the range and may be useful when you want more space ahead of longer toe proportions. Arthur is the rounder alternative if you prefer a less elongated silhouette.
"My feet swell significantly through the day. No shoe fits by evening."
Arthur's rounded shape offers more usable forefoot volume, while EEE provides our roomiest width. Because swelling can vary substantially, send measurements taken later in the day before ordering.
"My left and right feet measure differently. Which measurement should I use?"
