Soft calf, suede, heavily waxed leather and thicker boot leather do not respond identically to tension. The operator adjusts pressure and sequence rather than applying one fixed force to every upper.

Last removal is also a critical moment

After the bottom structure has progressed far enough, the last must be removed without damaging the upper, lining or opening. A well-lasted shoe should retain the intended form rather than immediately collapsing.

Hand work and repeatability are not opposites

A toe puff is reinforcement placed inside the front of many shoes to help the toe retain its intended shape.

The toe box is the overall space and shape around the toes.

The last creates that geometry. The toe puff helps the upper hold the geometry.

If the toe box is too narrow for your foot, a strong toe puff does not make the fit correct.

A plain-toe shoe can still contain a toe puff. A cap-toe shoe can also contain one.
